Saint Paul Organization Council (SPOC) October Meeting Notes

Date: 10/3/05 Time: 7:00PM Place: Library

STAFF REPORTS

NOTES:

SPOC President

James Massey

jfm00523@aol.com

Groups that do not have a SPOC representative, please send your rep! We want to improve communication across the parish, but we need you! In the near future all parish organizations will be receiving a letter requesting that a representative bring to the November meeting an updated calendar of events for the fiscal year 2005/2006 indicating events that require use of the Church and School facilities. A work session will be conducted to insure that facilities are not double-booked and a program devised to solve this continuing problem.

Save the date – 6:30 p.m., Dec. 3 is the Parish Christmas Party! We’re looking to really make it special this year, so let us know if you have ideas or you can help. We’ll definitely have something for kids, and a very nice meal for our St. Paul family, so please join us.

The Hispanic Ministry presented their Mexican Night Dinner on Sept 16th, making a little over $950 for the new building fund. We really appreciated the many volunteers from the Hispanic community that helped prepare and serve the meals! The Hispanic Ministry’s next project is the preparations for the celebration of the Virgen de Guadalupe which will be observed on Sunday and Monday evenings, December 11th and 12th.  More information coming as plans develop.

Hospital & Home Ministry

(Deacon Carl)

deaconcarlthelin@comcast.net

The Pastoral Care Givers went to Medical City Hospital on thirteen days during the month of September, visiting 542 patients. Over the past three months we have visited 1434 patients, which equates to about 482 hours donated by volunteers. That’s the equivalent of 12 weeks work! With our new volunteer who has finished training, there are a total of 23 people who visit the sick regularly, including Father Martin and Deacon Carl. Two more are in training now.

Music  Ministry

(Bernie Gotway)

bernie@gotway.com

The three choirs continue to recruit new members.  Those interested should contact the respective directors. The (9:15 Mass) Youth & Family Choir has gained some new singers and instrumentalists, but continues to welcome anyone interested. Many members are so busy and involved, everyone cannot be present each Sunday, so duplication of instruments & singers is very helpful.  We continue to need percussion, reeds and strings. The Youth and Family Choir & Orchestra will play for Confirmation Masses on October 15 at 10:00 am and 1:30 pm. Please contact Bernie Gotway if you can help sing or play, even if it’s for these special occasions.

September report: On our regular SVDP activities we provided $1,855.93 in financial assistance to 13 families and we were able to refer 31 people to other assistance sources by Network of Ministries.  SVDP and other parishioner volunteers helped 19 Katrina evacuee families (59 people) establish new homes with household items, furniture, clothing, and personal care products. The parish contributed over 2,000 pounds of non-perishable foods, personal care products, kitchen ware, linens and towels, and other items to the Katrina effort run by the SVDP and Network of Ministries. The parish is also currently assisting a number of evacuee families who have their children in our school.  Our work is just part of St. Vincent de Paul’s efforts in the area. Note about the Plano donation center: I would invite you to see the 38,000 square foot facility at 3801 E. Plano Parkway, Suite 300. It is a very impressive operation. The facility is now operating five trucks, has purchased about $90,000 of new furniture and various household items to deliver to evacuees. Now delivering complete apartment setups (furniture and essential household items) to over 40 evacuee families a day. I believe it is the most significant delivery of these items in the greater Dallas area. We have served over 1,000 families thus far, and currently have another 500 families in our system to be processed over the next two weeks.
